Chapter 1 · Write the problem, not the product

Most ideas start as a solution: "an app that…". Solutions are easy to fall in love with and hard to test. Problems are the opposite.

The problem sentence

Write one sentence using this shape:

[Specific person] struggles to [job] when [situation], which costs them [time, money or risk].

  • "Freelance designers struggle to chase late invoices when clients go quiet, which costs them about a week of income each quarter."
  • "Solo founders struggle to decide what to build first when every feature feels urgent, which costs them months."

Test the sentence

  1. Can you name three real people who fit the first part?
  2. Could you watch the situation happen?
  3. Is the cost something they would recognise in their own words?

If any answer is no, narrow the person or the situation until it is yes.

About this book

Most first products fail because nobody tested the riskiest assumption before building. This guide walks you through six short methods, from the problem sentence to a real paid experiment, and ends with a decision you can defend.

Every method ends with a concrete artefact, and every method includes a section on how to use it with an AI assistant without handing over your judgement.
